Great Bay Equine is looking for a motivated horse person to join our team as an Equine Veterinary Assistant. Established by Dr. A. Rachel Roemer in 2016, Great Bay Equine is a growing equine ambulatory practice based in Portsmouth, NH serving southern New Hampshire, the North Shore of Massachusetts and southwestern Maine. Our clientele is largely English performance horses (dressage, hunter/jumpers, eventing) with a nice mix of pleasure and backyard horses.

Workplace:
We pride ourselves on being a friendly, outgoing and professional practice. Please visit our website, www.greatbayequine.com, for more information about the services we provide. We work 4-5 days a week (schedule may change with seasonal needs) with varying hours. A typical work day is 8:00am-5pm. December through February are our slower months so hours may be reduced based on client demand. No weekend or after hours emergency call is required but days can start early and run late, especially during the busy spring/summer season. Certification is not required.
Job Requirements:
Must have extensive experience handling horses, including horses of all types (minis to drafts) and horses that may be difficult behaviorally (high strung, needle shy, etc.). Safety of the veterinarian, assistant and client is the mostimportant aspect of this job.
Excellent communication skills and attitude: We pride ourselves on professional, friendly communication and teamwork in our practice. As a Veterinary Assistant you will have extensive interaction with owners in person. We are looking for someone who can keep a smile on their face even at the end of a long day.
Excellent organizational skills: Our days are fast paced and, depending on the day, we may see dozens of horses and interact with numerous clients. A successful assistant must keep the equipment and truck clean and organized, keep track of medications that are administered and dispensed, process lab samples, generate invoices and keep track of follow-up tasks (check-ins with owners, sending recommendations, etc.).
Clean driving record with a current unencumbered driver's license. Assistant will drive daily between farm calls.
Must be able to run/jog horses for lameness exams and comfortably handle and restrain horses in all types of weather/ conditions. Ability to lunge horses comfortably is necessary.
Basic knowledge of equine anatomy, common equine medications, sterile surgical preparation, sterile technique, and preparing lab samples is preferred, but on-the-job training and mentoring will be provided to the right candidate.
Must be capable of lifting and maneuvering 50 pounds.
