Technician II - Delco Lab
The Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine seeks a Technician II to join Dr. Michelle Delco's lab. This position will support a research program that uses cellular and molecular biology, biochemistry, histology, and animal models to study injuries and diseases of orthopedic soft tissues across species, including horses and humans. Specifically, we are interested in the role of mitochondrial dysfunction in the pathogenesis of disease, mitochondria-related therapies, and mitochondrial function in regenerative medicine.
The job responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Maintain the daily laboratory workflow,
- support trainee projects and participate in experimental research studies, as directed by the principal investigator (PI)
- General lab maintenance including ordering supplies, preparation of reagents, generation and maintenance of lab databases and other duties as assigned
- Ensure that lab personnel adhere to laboratory safety protocols/standards including safe handling of sharps and other hazards and provide technical training to other members of the lab.

Required Qualifications
- High school diploma and up to 2 years of relevant experience or equivalent combination
- A proactive attitude and the ability to anticipate needs of the laboratory and PI.
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
- Must be a team player and able to work independently, be self-motivated, eager and willing to learn.
- Strong interpersonal skills, oral and written communication are required.
- Scientific interest, enthusiasm, and a commitment to experimental goals are essential.
- Competent computer skills (MS Office, email, internet/literature searches, and data analysis programs).
- Position requires successful completion of the necessary Cornell training courses (e.g., animal handling, blood borne pathogens, chemical, and laboratory safety, chemical safety).
- Ability to cultivate and develop inclusive and equitable working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community members.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Biomedical Sciences or a related field.
- Experience or training in cell/tissue culture techniques, molecular/cell biology, biochemistry, histology, immunohistochemistry microscopy/imaging, flow cytometry, image analysis softwares.
- Experience handling mice and/or larger animals (sheep, horses) is desirable, but not absolutely required and training will be provided.
- Strong computer skills and experience with image analysis and statistical computer programs.
- Experience with conducting clinical trials is preferred, but not necessary and training will be provided.
- Experience in and/or demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and wellbeing.
Important Details about the Position
- This is an onsite position located in Ithaca, NY.
- This is a full-time one-year term position with potential for extension contingent upon funding and performance.
- We are unable to provide Visa sponsorship, now or in the future, for this position.
- Relocation assistance will not be provided for this position.
While the regular business hours are 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, the specific schedule may change to meet the needs of the business, requiring employees to work early mornings, evenings, weekends and University holidays and scheduled breaks.

Who We Are:
Dr. Michelle Delco's research aims to understand how joint injury leads to arthritis in horses and humans. Specifically, she is investigating mitochondria, the energy-producing centers of the cell, as a link between cartilage trauma and osteoarthritis. The goal of her research is to develop new strategies to improve healing and prevent irreversible joint disease and chronic pain in equine and human athletes who suffer orthopedic injuries.
