Job Summary
Under supervision and direction of the Instructional Support Supervisor and Lab Animal Coordinator (ISSLAC), Gourley Clinical Teaching Center (GCTC) leadership, and SVM faculty course leaders, coordinate activities to facilitate and provide instructional support for the didactic and clinical teaching activities within the School of Veterinary Medicine.
Responsible for complete organization of and assistance in the instruction of veterinary students in laboratory courses hosted at the Gourley Clinical Teaching Center and ancillary locations.
Serve as unit lead safety coordinator, ensuring GCTC compliance with all departmental, campus, state, and federal safety requirements. Primary liaison with SVM Safety Officer, EH&S, campus fire department, and county fire marshal. Responsible for developing and maintaining training initiatives, records, and standard operating procedures related to lab, staff and student safety. Provide oversight and stewardship of departmental resources (facility, equipment, supplies, staff, animal live and cadaver) in compliance with departmental/campus standards and procedures.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Must work in an environment where animals are used in teaching and research. Contact with animals, including the restraint of animals (sometimes fractious) as required. Restrain equine and livestock species; ability to halter, load and unload animals in transport trailers and place them in and out of stocks/stanchions and head gates. Move animals on and off gurneys, into and out of cages, transport vans, stalls and holding pens, and transfer heavy equipment from area to area.
Handle/maneuver/lift equipment, materials, animals, cadavers, and supplies weighing up to 50 pounds.
Work where hazardous or infectious materials are present. Health status sufficient to be certified to use a cartridge-type respirator. May be required to wear protective clothing for extended periods of time including: gown, coveralls, gloves, masks, face shields, goggles, sleeves and head covers.
Stand for extended periods of time; walk, crouch, and kneel throughout the shift.
Drive large size animal transport vans between various locations on and off campus.
Maneuver truck/trailer combinations to haul livestock and equine species.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Required to work variable or long hours on short notice, including early mornings, late evenings, weekends, covering staff shortages and holiday shifts. Good attendance habits are crucial. Vacations may be restricted during the academic year.
Work in high traffic areas with constant noise from animals and people in a fast-paced, constantly changing, and heavy volume patient-care environment.
Work in an environment where animals are used for teaching. Work in a shelter animal environment.
Work with animal cadavers and preserved animal specimens.
Work under regular exposure to animal odors, zoonotic diseases, anesthesia, and cleaning chemicals typical of an animal hospital environment.
May require working with or around areas with sick animals, hazardous materials, and/or infectious diseases, and distraught students and staff.
May be required to wear protective clothing for extended periods of time including: gown, coveralls, gloves, masks, face shields, goggles, sleeves and head covers.
This position is subject to Medical Surveillance procedures and review in accordance with Federal and State Laws and Regulations and University Policy.
Work at other related areas and Animal Sciences facilities on an as-needed basis.
Participate in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Pull Notice System.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Education/Experience:
Minimum 3 years' experience handling, restraining and caring for the health and welfare of equine and livestock species, small mammals (rabbits, hamsters, guinea pigs, rats), and small companion animals in a hospital environment.
Experience with facility, records, inventory, and equipment management. Solid analytical and problem-solving skills with computer competency.
Experience applying specific and detailed safety procedures such as biosafety and confined entry requirements, radiation safety, biosafety protocols, acts governing animal welfare, and specifics of Safety Data Sheets.
Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):
Proficient technical skills in radiology, sedation, anesthetic monitoring, surgical assistance, and common medical procedures in small animal, equine and livestock (blood collection, injections, catheterization, and diagnostic procedures) sufficient to instruct staff and veterinary students.
Skills in developing, writing, and maintaining training programs and safety documentation.
Proficiency in writing, leadership, interpersonal communication, motivation of staff, and team building.
Exceptional instructional abilities to guide veterinary students in clinical procedures used in veterinary medicine and to coach staff to promote safety in a positive, effective manner, with flexibility to tailor the of method of coaching/instruction to the individual and/or situation at hand.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Preferred License/Certification:
Current California Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) license and/or minimum 5 years' experience and skills working with horses and livestock species in a hospital environment.
Preferred Education/Experience:
Demonstrated experience working effectively and efficiently, independent of supervision with high level of technical expertise, independent judgment and acceptance of responsibility.
Experience teaching veterinary or veterinary technology students, evaluating the performance of others, and effectively instructing others on protocols.
Knowledge of University equipment inventory policy and procedure, experience purchasing livestock and/or working with livestock dealers, and knowledge of laws, regulations, and policies governing the use of animals in teaching.
