The Hospital for Large Animals (HLA) provides high-quality veterinary medical, surgical, and emergency care to approximately 2,000 patients per year consisting predominantly of horses with lesser numbers of camelids, goats, sheep and pigs. In addition, the hospital provides a positive learning experience for Tufts veterinary students, interns and residents. What You'll Do
This position has a Supervisory role with responsibility for veterinary technicians and veterinary assistants working in the Hospital for Large Animals. The position oversees the overall daily management and direction of the clinic floor activities related to both outpatient and inpatient care.
Other responsibilities include implementing policies, procedures, and guidelines to maintain compliance with regulations and ensure excellent patient care. This position will be responsible for all outpatient and inpatient service staffing decisions, training, cross training, scheduling, reviewing performance and resolving personnel and scheduling issues that may arise in HLA.
As an Assistant Manager, Veterinary Nursing in the Hospitial for Large Animal you will:
Participate in the recruitment, interviewing, selection, and is responsible for the training and onboarding of new veterinary technicians.
Be responsible for the supervision and retention of existing veterinary technicians and veterinary assistants in the Hospital for Large Animals.
Work closely with hospital management, and others to develop effective recruitment programs for veterinary technicians, and related positions.
Work hand in hand with the Hospital Director and the faculty section chief with a focus on training and onboarding of technicians to support and improve their professional development and veterinary skill set.
Assist with training and cross-training programs and/or new on-boarding procedures for staff members.
Work to continuously improve the medical and operational support provided by the veterinary technicians and veterinary assistant within the Hospital for Large Animals.
Develop and maintain excellent working interactions with Hospital Manager, Hospital Director, Faculty Section Chiefs, and other supervisors.
Participate or lead in the writing of relevant clinical procedure, protocols, and policies, in collaboration with the Hospital Director and Hospital Administrator, as required. Implement procedures and ensure compliance with policies and systems to maximize operating efficiency and consistency in the hospital.
Ensure that University policies, and best management practices are followed in their area of responsibility.
Ensure employees are trained in, aware of, and following these best practices. Ensure all procedures and operations are complying with hospital standard operating policies and procedures.
Ensure effective internal communications by identifying key messages and the proper medium of communication (verbal or written) and delivering these messages in an appropriate and timely manner both to upper management and to faculty, staff, and students as appropriate.
Establish and nurture an environment that is collaborative and focused on creating the best possible atmosphere for the patients, students, staff, and faculty.upervises the service technicians (Medicine, Surgery and Sports Medicine) and the treatment technicians who provide 24-hour care to our hospitalized patients. Leadership responsibilities will be administered primarily on the clinic floor but will also include administrative time off the floor. Participates in the hiring, retention, termination, disciplinary processes, and long-term staffing strategies for the veterinary technical staff members.
Assess (in conjunction with the Hospital Director and section chiefs) and allocate human resources appropriate when staff shortages occur so adequate staffing is available for service needs and patient treatments.
Ensure the on-going development and progression through the career ladders for technicians, assistants, and attendants under their supervision.
Monitor staff performance to ensure highest level of customer service is being given to all patients, residents, faculty, and peer staff. Oversee staff assignments. Assign projects to staff as necessary.
Create job postings for vacant positions and interviewing candidates. Create training plans for new employees. Provide coaching and feedback on an ongoing basis and discipline, if necessary.
Participate in the orientation programs for new residents, interns, staff, and students.
Based on staffing needs, the position will provide some direct support to the hospital’s inpatients and outpatients.
This may include monitoring and implementing treatment plans as ordered by clinicians to insure prompt delivery of high quality patient care. Assist clinicians, students and veterinary technicians with procedures and treatments. Ensure the completion of diagnostic testing as ordered by clinicians including bench-top lab tests.
The nursing supervisor will provide effective communication with Clients to provide education, demonstrate procedures, and review discharge instructions including medication administration.
Assist and instruct veterinary students and student technicians in all technical aspects of patient care.
Help assist Hospital Director and Hospital Administrator on special projects when needed.
All other projects as requested by Hospital Administration.
This position must work closely with the large animal section chiefs (Medicine, Sports Medicine and Surgery), and the client services assistant manager to ensure optimal patient care.
What We're Looking For
Basic Requirements:
BA/BS with 5+ years of related experience in a veterinary practice environment.
3+ years of managerial supervisory experience.
Familiarity with Microsoft Office, specifically Excel and Word.
Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. with or without accommodation.
Preferred Qualifications:
Demonstrated leadership experience; excellent computer skills; outstanding organizational, interpersonal, communications and time-management skills; ability to exercise discretion and interact effectively with people at all levels and from diverse backgrounds; maintain professional positive outlook, handle multiple projects simultaneously; ability to work with frequent interruptions and to multi-task; exceptional attention to detail.
CVT is preferred.
Experience with horses and/or the equine industry is considered an asset.
Flexibility with work schedule, as occasional evening and weekend work may be required to address emerging issues.
Enjoy working with people and solving problems.
Demonstrated knowledge of veterinary patient care software (EMR – electronic medical record) systems.
Pay Range
Minimum $57,900.00, Midpoint $72,450.00, Maximum $87,000.00
Salary is based on related experience, expertise, and internal equity; generally, new hires can expect pay between the minimum and midpoint of the range.
