Our practice is a regional equine referral hospital with a great reputation in our region, over 25 years. We need an equine veterinary technician or experienced assistant to join our team and we want to reward the right applicant with a very competitive package.
Our clinic location has a quiet, rural western feel. It’s 20 minutes from downtown Santa Fe, with its world-class restaurants, art and culture, and 40 minutes from skiing and high mountains. It’s also 40 minutes from big city amenities in Albuquerque. It is a relatively mild, dry climate at 6200 ft. In winter, drive for 30 minutes and drop down 2000 feet for comfortable year-round riding, hiking or biking. In summer, drive 30 minutes and go up 2000 feet for hiking or fishing in the cool mountains. We are right in the center of New Mexico’s film industry- many famous movies and series have been shot within a few miles of our facility. We often work on movie horses.
Our well- equipped surgical hospital is on a scenic 50 acres. We have excellent equipment including a full surgical setup, several video endoscopes, digital ultrasound and x-ray and the Equinosis lameness locator. 40 horses live at the boarding/ training facility. We are looking for someone that is a confident horse handler, who hopefully brings experience and ability in a variety of equine veterinary practice areas. Mostly we are looking for someone who will fit our group culture and be willing to learn and contribute.
This is usually a 2-3 doctor practice, but currently is just one. The founder of the practice, Doug Thal DVM DABVP, has practiced for 30 years, has particular interests in surgery, lameness diagnosis and treatment, and colic diagnosis and surgery, but also enjoys variety. He likes treating challenging dental and sinus cases, treating foals and breeding mares. The practice still has a small mobile caseload. Dr Thal’s style of practice emphasizes clear client communication and excellent horsemanship. He enjoys teaching young vets, techs and assistants everything he knows. Dr Thal is also the creator of the well-known equine health app and website, Horse Side Vet Guide. www.horsesidevetguide.com Many technicians and young vets use this app. The practice approach mirrors the HSVG logic.
The job will involve among other things: in-clinic patient care, general assisting, lameness exams, surgical support, anesthesia, imaging, care of ICU patients, lab procedures, inventory and potentially practice management. If you want to be part of Horse Side Vet Guide, you can help with that too!
