Summary of Duties:

This Veterinary Technician 2-Veterinary Teaching Hospital position is assigned to the specified service and will provide veterinary technical support and assist in all aspects on animal care within that section, including large and small animal. Perform skilled veterinary technical duties as assigned. Assist students and clinicians in all aspects of patient care, including, but not limited to, maintaining daily patient records, recording procedures performed, medications given, and general work-up of patients. Enter patient information and charges into hospital computer system for recording all charges, procedures, and miscellaneous information for client billing and patient records. Demonstrate and instruct professional students on technical skills. Order, track and maintain supplies of drugs and consumable items.

Veterinary Specialist 2/Technician Vacancies:

Cardiology

The Cardiology technician provides veterinary technical support in the management and treatment of cardiology patients in the WSU Veterinary Teaching Hospital. Our comprehensive program features an array of services including cardiac diagnostic testing and consults, interventional services such as pacemaker placement and ballooning, heart disease and blood pressure management, and arrhythmia care. This position will be an intricate part of the cardiology team involved with receiving and discharging patients, assisting with procedures and treatments, and maintaining patient records. The cardiology tech will be involved with instructing 4th year professional veterinary students on properly performing electrocardiograms, venipuncture, cystocentesis, IV catheter placement, and acquiring accurate Doppler blood pressures. The technician is also involved in setting up operating rooms for interventional procedures and assisting in the procedures.

Radiology

The primary responsibilities for this position will be to provide veterinary technical support by performing CT and MRI examinations of all species (large, small and exotic), including post-mortem specimens and inanimate objects. Includes instructing and orienting residents in basic equipment operations and acquiring diagnostic imaging studies in a timely manner and the ability to adapt them to individual patient need based on the requested procedure and patient cooperation. Administer contrast media and pharmaceuticals under clinician direction. Make sure that appropriate safety protocols are followed by faculty, residents, interns, and students. Perform routine quality control procedures and scheduled maintenance when needed on the equipment. Practice and teach good patient handling skills and act as a patient advocate. Perform necessary immobilization (includes calculating doses and administering sedation). Evaluate images for technical quality. Assist in maintaining inventory of supplies and evaluating new products and equipment. Provide training for students and faculty in specialty area such as a specific computer software program- RIS/PACS. Assist with maintaining a clean and orderly work environment. Teach and model quality veterinary nursing care.

Community Practice/Exotics

This position will work with 2 different services splitting time equally between them. The first one is our fast-paced Community Practice that models after the private practice industry for our students. This service provides both wellness care and treatment for minor injuries of dogs and cats. While on this service your duties can include providing clinical expertise in canine and feline venipuncture, peripheral IV catheter placement, animal restraint, inducing and monitoring animals under anesthesia, performing dental radiographs and routine dentistry, and assisting in some oral surgeries among other tasks. The second service is our Exotics Service. This service sees animals ranging from small field mice up to an occasional wallaby and everything in between. This service sees both client owned animals as well as wildlife animals. Responsibilities will entail patient treatments and husbandry, assisting in anesthesia and surgery, obtaining diagnostic samples and educating clients under the direction of the veterinarians. Safe handling skills, flexible attitude and a calm demeanor will be necessary traits for this person. There will also be an expectation of some clinical teaching and mentoring to the fourth year veterinary students so clear communication and patience is important.

Critical Care
Fully Staffed 24/7 the WSU Critical Care unit is a fast growing service. Licensed technicians help to oversee and assist with patient stabilization and treatments. This team of outstanding professionals provide compassionate care at the highest level using the latest tools, medicines, and techniques. This position will handle the critically ill and emergent patients with round the clock observation and therapy. Technician duties include peripheral and central intravenous line placement, canine and feline urinary catheter placement, pain assessment, administering constant rate infusions, monitoring vitals including direct and indirect blood pressure, ECG monitoring, and patient advocacy. Duties will also include performing and/or assisting with thoracocentesis, abdominocentesis, administering blood transfusions, and performing CPR. This position is involved in developing the emergency and critical care knowledge of 4th year veterinary students. As such, successful candidates are effective communicators and demonstrate teaching ability.

Anesthesia

The anesthesia technicians work in collaboration with the Veterinary Teaching Hospital's clinical anesthesiologists to coordinate patient anesthesia schedules, check pre-op work ups, administer pre-op and induction medications, intubate and maintain an appropriate level of sedation or anesthesia. This position will also be involved with venous and arterial catheterization, and patient instrumentation as appropriate for the procedure. At this level you will be expected to have the ability to manage up to an ASA 3 level case with minimal support. Managing these cases means you will be working in conjunction with clinicians and students to handle technical problems related to the delivery of anesthesia to patients which may include but is not limited to addressing inappropriate anesthetic depths, changes to cardiovascular status, recognizing cardiac arrhythmias, and trouble-shooting monitor or equipment issues. There will also be some clinical teaching and mentoring to the fourth-year veterinary students. This position will work with both large and small animal patients and therefore must have experience with both. You will oversee and be expected to complete medical records to maintain patient data essential for accurate anesthesia records as well as insure proper charge capture. This position will also be trained to perform various analgesic blocks such as epidurals, dental blocks and brachial plexus blocks. There will be occasional on-call responsibilities. The expected schedule for this position will depend on the needs of the unit. There are currently three (3) positions available; 2-day shift positions and 1 swing shift with shared duty in Small Animal ICU.

Float/Pool

This position provides the widest variety of support in the Veterinary Teaching Hospital. Members of this team may be asked to work in any one of the services areas throughout the hospital on any given day. Previous experience with dogs, cats, pocket pets, birds, and small wildlife is helpful for the float position. This position will train in and assist all departments across the hospital, which necessitates flexibility. At this level members of the Float team will receive specialty training to work with the Oncology Radiation Team on the Linear Accelerator, and I -131 animals. The Float Technician will assist our Certified Canine Rehab Practitioner with underwater treadmill therapy, therapeutic exercise, and low light laser therapy. There will also be opportunity for advanced training in therapeutic ultrasound and E-Stim.

Clinical Instructional Services-DVM Teaching Program

This position provides skilled veterinary technician support and organizes live and cadaver animal instructional laboratories within the Veterinary Clinical Sciences professional degree program. Duties include teaching veterinary students in laboratory and surgical environments. Skilled veterinary technician duties include providing pre- and post-op care such as physical examinations, diagnostic procedures, anesthesia induction, surgery, recovery and discharge. This position will be called on to administer injections, and medication, draw blood, collect specimens and monitor vital signs of animals under the care of teaching animal protocols, while demonstrating and teaching students proper methods. This position may lead hourly employees and will assist with the organization, set-up and tear-down of teaching program labs.

Equine Veterinary Technician

This technician will be part of the Equine Team at Washington State University's Veterinary Teaching hospital, which encompasses equine orthopedic and soft tissue surgery, internal medicine, and theriogenology. This technician must demonstrate both horsemanship skills, abilities and mindfulness and the technical skills required by all licensed veterinary technicians at WSU, as well as demonstrated knowledge of horse handling, behavior, and restraint for adult and juvenile horses. The position emphasis is on horse handling skills and awareness to provide a safe working environment for the clinicians, colleagues, and students in the Equine section at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital.

Oncology-VS2

The WSU Veterinary Teaching Hospital seeks a licensed veterinary technician who is a good team player and has exceptional patient care skills. As part of the oncology team, you will work closely with our clients and their pets and assist the veterinarians in performing radiation and chemotherapy treatments as well as follow up care. As an added plus you will be trained to help run the Linear Accelerator for the radiation treatments, a unique opportunity for any veterinary technician. To be successful in this position you need to have a strong work ethic and good communication skills and be an effective patient advocate. Organizational skills and solid all-around technical skills are important, especially atraumatic intubation and intravenous catheter placement. Come help us provide compassion and individualized care to our oncology patients and their family.

Required Qualifications:

• An Associate Degree from an accredited school of animal technology, or registration, certification or licensure in an animal or veterinary technician field and one year full-time experience as a Veterinary Specialist 1; OR equivalent education/experience.
  
• Must meet the required criteria (WAC 246-935-060) to be eligible to sit for the Washington State veterinary technician exam and must pass the exam the first time it is available.
  
• Must pass WSU radiation safety training exam first time it is available.
  
• Depending upon scheduling needs of the hospital, evening, overnight and weekend shifts may be required.
  

Preferred Qualifications:

• A combination of two years of experience working in specialty area(s) within veterinary medicine.
  
• Experience training and teaching students, interns and residents in specialty clinic setting.
  
• Experience/training in large and small animal veterinary specialties.

Monthly Salary:

Range 50 | $4,117 - $5,535 (Step A - M) | Successful candidates typically begin at the beginning of the salary range and receive scheduled salary increment increases in accordance with WAC 357-28 OR applicable Collective Bargaining Agreement.
