The best care starts with the best caregivers.
The Cornell University Hospital for Animals offers an environment that supports you in delivering outstanding patient care through technology, mentorship, continuing education, and, most importantly, peers who are just as passionate as you are about providing the best care possible.
We seek a Licensed Veterinary Technician who will be responsible for patient care, customer support, and communications for our Ophthalmology section. As a valuable member of our team, you will provide technical assistance for routine and elaborate appointments, case workups, and procedures for companion animals. This will include consults for equine, farm, and exotic animals.
To be successful in this role, you will need to be a patient advocate for quality care and be a collaborative instructor to the veterinary students, interns, and residents, which includes sharing your insights and experiences, offering care options while explaining the benefits and disadvantages, and guiding the students in practical experience. Specifically, you will:
- Provide high-quality technical support to the Ophthalmology service, including assisting with daily customer appointments, performing basic ophthalmic diagnostic tests/procedures, sedating patients for procedures, performing electroretinograms and ocular ultrasounds, as well as in surgical procedures.
- Promote excellent customer relationships and efficient service workflow by coordinating procedures and communicating a sense of assurance to customers; develop and maintain excellent working relationships and professionalism within the hospital, including other team members, students, other service technicians, staff, clinicians, and customers.
- Assist in collecting and submitting lab samples; perform surgical prep of patients for ophthalmic procedures; and assist in minor surgical procedures in the treatment area.
- Act as the OR-circulating technician and maintain aseptic conditions during the procedures and provide floating backup coverage to other services in the CUHA as identified and assigned by the supervisor.
- Ensure appropriate documentation in the medical record, generation of requests, and billing for services rendered using the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system and various paper forms.
- Provide instruction to veterinary students, interns, and occasionally residents in technical skills and procedures.
- Work with faculty/staff to implement clinical investigations, including data collection, and/or collaborate with other service clinicians/staff on clinical investigations and assist with research projects as needed within the CUHA.
What qualifications are required?
- Associates degree in Veterinary Technology.
- Up to 2 years of relevant experience.
- New York State licensure or eligibility to become licensed in NYS.
To be successful you will need:
- Interest in ongoing career growth and advanced credential development.
- Willingness to meet the physical requirements of the position, which include, but are not limited to, stressful circumstances, prolonged standing, and kneeling, and lifting heavy patients. Must be able to lift and restrain animals that may exceed 50 pounds.
- Excellent communication, organizational and relational skills to aid effective communication with staff, students, technicians, veterinarians, and customers in a professional manner at all times.
- Must be comfortable in guiding veterinary students in practical experience.
- Strong interest in working collaboratively as a team member as well as proactively in a fast-paced, dynamic environment handling multiple tasks with contending timelines while paying close attention to details.
The Cornell University Hospital for Animals provides 24-hour care for pets 365 days of the year.
The majority of our teaching and routine care for this role occurs Monday through Friday, day shifts. Other hours, as determined by caseload and need, to include weekends and holidays (includes generous holiday pay) may be required.
