Licensed Veterinary Technician-Cornell Ruffian Equine Specialists (position located in Elmont, NY)

Cornell University Hospital for Animals (CUHA) provides leadership in patient care, education, clinical investigation, and scientific innovation and is one of the finest veterinary teaching hospitals in North America. As an extension of CUHA, the Cornell Ruffian Equine Specialists' (CRES) Hospital in Elmont, NY will provide state-of-the-art surgical, imaging, diagnostic, and rehabilitation services to enhance equine health. At CRES, veterinarians aspire to assimilate knowledge gained on all fronts - at the track, in the show ring, at the research bench, and in the hospital - to deliver paradigm-shifting veterinary medical care.
What you will do:
We currently have an opening for a Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT) position. As a CRES LVT, you should be extremely independent, self-motivated, have a team-based approach and mindset, and be interested in working in an innovative and challenging environment that will provide an excellent experience with equine animals in all aspects of emergency and patient care. You will serve as a patient advocate for the owner to assure an optimal experience.
Our Technicians provide support and cross train as Receiving Technicians, Surgery Technicians, as well as Anesthesia and Imaging technicians. This position requires flexibility and supports a hospital with 24/7 operations. Your primary schedule will be days, but will include holiday and weekend shifts.
Responsibilities include:
- Manage admissions and discharges for CRES patients, including assisting with emergency exams.
- Monitor and assess conditions of all in-house patients in all wards (ICU and regular wards), administer prescribed medications and regularly scheduled treatments as prescribed. Run clinical pathology samples as needed.
- Setup before, assist during, and cleanup after all emergencies including any and all surgical cases. Handle emergency and critical inpatients using sound judgment to best stabilize animals, at times, in the absence of a clinician.
- Setup before, assist during, and cleanup after endoscopy, ultrasound, imaging and other equipment needed for medical and surgical procedures.
- Provide technical assistance for routine and complex emergencies, case workups, and procedures.
- Assist surgeons with the preparation and management of patient flow through the clinic, including communicating with clients and referring veterinarians.
Required Qualifications:
- Associates degree in Veterinary Technology from an AVMA accredited institution, plus NYS Licensure and up to 2 years relevant
experience or equivalent combination. - Prior experience as an LVT desired, or other direct working experience with horses.
- Must be able to work independently in a fast-paced environment
- Interest in on-going career growth and advanced skill development.
- Excellent communication skills and willingness to work in a busy, team-oriented clinical environment
- Applicant must have demonstrated ability to restrain large animals as well as the ability to jog horses multiple times daily; must have the ability to stand for extended periods of time as well as the ability to kneel and remain in a steady position during procedures or treatments.
- Rabies vaccine and ongoing titer checks will be required and paid for by the clinic.
